Small Perks

A 6 7/8Once a year a catalog that weighs nearly ten pounds crosses my desk and each employee gets to choose an agenda or calendar, compliments of the company. I picked up this action agenda, and so far it has worked very well for me.

Since we are left to our own devices when it comes to project management, I take a large project and outline it first, then break it down into bite-size pieces. When I get to the block of time set aside for projects, I write a list of things I would like to accomplish on the first day. The notes section works perfect for backburner ideas and any comments about the project for that day. At the end of the first day I revise the list and start a list of things I would like to see completed on the project for the next day, and so on.

After a week, I review my progress. It’s a neat way to reference what I was thinking at the time I built or tested something, and I can check to see if all the questions were answered or problems worked out.

This week Tim and Rich are doing live coverage of the National Western Stock Show in Denver, so I am covering for Tim while he is away. No working on the fun stuff for now.

How do you manage your projects? Do you use software, an action notebook, a GTD list, etc.? Do you have a project manager? Would you change anything, or do you like the system you are using?

Make a small part of your world beautiful

Quick: what’s a 5 foot by 5 foot space that has thin, beige walls, where you spend the majority of your day? Yep. It’s your cubicle. Make a small part of your world beautiful: if you have to spend all day in it, why not make it look nice? I’m starting with some fresh wallpaper on my screen.

  • Astronomy Picture of the Day RSS feed – Get fed a new photo of the stars, sun, planets and more every day. Helps activate my imagination and keep me creative when I am reminded of the possibilities of other worlds out there
  • Hi-res wide screen wallpaper – Because I have a fancy monitor with enough screen space that I never found it necessary to ask for a second monitor
  • Dark Project Studios – Beautiful art delivered right to your screen
  • Fractal World Gallery – There are many sites with great photos and artwork that can be transformed into wallpaper instantly. Donate if you like what you see
